Join our free webinar where we will cover the DfE’s guidance on Suspension and Permanent Exclusion, which was updated in September 2023. We will discuss some of the new changes introduced since, including the use of remote hearings in prescribed circumstances and cancelling permanent exclusions decisions.
The DfE’s has published new statutory guidance on suspension, permanent exclusion and pupil movement effective 1 September 2023, replacing the extensively revised statutory guidance published following consultation in 2022.
Since its introduction last year, we have gained a wealth of expertise and insight into how Headteachers, Governors’ Discipline Committees (GDCs) and Independent Review Panels (IRPs) are dealing with the changes made in the 2022 statutory guidance.
From 1 September 2023, the use of ‘remote access’ meetings and hearings is now permitted in prescribed circumstances (notably, at the request of parents). The DfE has also provided more clarity on the Headteacher’s obligations when cancelling exclusion decisions before they are reviewed by a GDC.
Additionally, since September 2022 Headteachers have been advised to consider whether the school’s Governors would benefit from further or refresher training before reviewing their decisions. We have not seen this requirement being universally applied, and for this reason we are pleased to offer this specialist webinar giving an overview on the Governors’ role in respect of exclusion decisions.
This webinar is also suitable for Headteachers, members of the Senior Leadership Team, Trustees and Governance Professionals who are involved in the exclusion process or support GDCs with their role.
