This webinar will be delivered over two days as two and half-hour webinars, and everyone attending Part A will automatically be registered for Part B.

We will go through the legal position (including the changes made by the new School Admissions Code coming into effect on 1 September 2021), along with the process for determining clear and fully compliant admission arrangements, with discussion on the drafting of commonly used criteria. We will also go through admission-related requests and applications, and the statutory appeals procedure. We will also explore how the admission of certain children can be resisted/challenged in some circumstances.

Admission law is complex and often misunderstood. 

In these training session, we will go through the legal position (including the changes made by the new School Admissions Code coming into effect on 1 September 2021), along with the process for determining clear and fully compliant admission arrangements, with discussion on the drafting of commonly used criteria. We will also go through admission-related requests and applications, and the statutory appeals procedure. We will also explore how the admission of certain children can be resisted/challenged in some circumstances.

Delivered across two days, these two-hour sessions will cover:

• the current School Admissions Code (2014) and the new School Admissions Code coming into effect on 1 September 2021 (subject to parliamentary approval), along with other relevant legislation
• the roles of the school/trust and local authority
• the duty to determine fair, clear, objective and compliant admission arrangements
• information on the inclusion of mandatory, prohibited and best practice information, including discussion on best practice wording for oversubscription criteria
• specific considerations for primaries, secondaries, nurseries and sixth forms
• the statutory process for determining and varying admissions
• best practice consultations
• the role of the Schools Adjudicator
• different types of admission appeals and dealing with admission appeal hearings
• resisting/challenging the admission of certain children in some circumstances
• resisting being named in an EHC plan during consultation, and after being named.

This training is aimed at:

  • Trustees, governors and admission committees
  • Headteachers/principals, CEOs and executive headteachers/principals
  • Nursery managers, heads of sixth form/sixth form coordinators
  • Admission clerks/officers.
